Pigment to Paint
In this special three-hour workshop, participants will learn how to make their own oil paints from scratch! Through this process, we will uncover the origin stories of color through a historical lens. More specifically, we will learn the history of the five different all-natural and non-toxic pigments that we will be using in this unique workshop. From the step-by-step process of breaking down natural materials into a powdered pigment to mixing pigments with a binding medium, students will create their own oil colors.
Each student will go home with three tubes of their own hand-made oil paint.
No experience is required.
Portrait Painting in Oils
This class will be an in-depth study of the human portrait through the process of oil painting with a limited 4-color palette, known as the Zorn Palette. Working from a live model, photo references, and master copies, we will explore gesture, structure, proportions, and facial anatomy. We will learn how to manage hue and chroma and how to create a wide spectrum of colors using only titanium white, ivory black, cadmium red, and yellow ochre. We will also cover the basic handling of materials, brush management, and surface preparation. Foundational drawing knowledge and experience working with the human form at least through drawing will be helpful; however, the Zorn Palette is great for beginner painters.
Cost of the class Includes model fees, room and board, 3 meals a day, & workshop tuition!
